Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery I

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was established when CQMU-SH was initially founded in 1955, and the ward was established in 1960 with 25 beds. It is a comprehensive department that integrates clinical care, student teaching, scientific research and disease prevention. The department has set five sub-specialties: head and neck oncology and reconstructive surgery, traumatic and plastic surgery, orthognathic and joint surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery and alveolar surgery. There are currently 15 doctors and 21 nurses in the department, including 3 chief physicians and 5 associate chief physicians, 8 of them with doctoral degree and 6 with master’s degree. The department has 1 member of the Standing Committee of the Dental and Alveolar Surgery of the Chinese Stomatological Association, 2 members of the Oral and Maxillofacial Trauma Fracture and Orthognathics of the Chinese Stomatological Association, 1 member of Oral Genetic and Rare Diseases of Chinese Stomatological Association, 1 member of Oral Tumor Integrated Medicine of China Anti-Cancer Association, 1 academician of International College of Dentists (ICD), 1 member of the International Implant Association (ITI) and 1 member of the Expert Group of Medical Malpractice and Forensic Expertise in Chongqing.

There are 7 dental chairs and 48 beds. The department is now equipped with surgery navigation system, stereoscopic microscope, temporomandibular joint endoscope, nitrous oxide (N2O) anesthesia system, orthognathic microdynamic system, ultrasonic bone knife, ultrasonic knife and other advanced medical equipments.

Over the past six decades, the department has achieved great advances in discipline developments. In terms of head and neck oncology and reconstructive surgery, we widely adopt CAD/CAM techniques and virtual surgery, and utilize fibula myocutaneous flap, iliac myocutaneous flap, lateral thigh myocutaneous flap, forearm flap, pectoralis major myocutaneous flap, supraclavicular artery flap, perforator flap, etc., to digitally and precisely perform en bloc tumor resection and personalized defect reconstruction. We performed the first case of jaw-in-a-day technique in China, representing the state of the art in jaw reconstruction. In the aspect of tumor chemotherapy, the precision medicine is used to precisely kill tumor cells, and greatly improved patients’ quality of life and 5-year survival rates. We are now the biggest orthognathic center in Chongqing, which has helped patients with maxillofacial development malformation to get a beautiful and personalized appearance. We have appealed patients in Chongqing as well as from Southwest China in terms of terporomandibular joint diseases, and greatly solved the problem of joint disorders. As to the traumatic and plastic surgery, digital techniques are adopted to individually help patients repair facial trauma. In the aspect of alveolar surgery, we are the most extensive application of painless and minimally invasive extraction of wisdom teeth and complicated teeth in China, with over one hundred thousand patients being treated annually.
